Best GPS Speedometer Apps for Android

Choose NitroHUD for a free, ad-free GPS speedometer and mirrored HUD, KTW Apps for speed over navigation, Ulysse Speedometer Pro for vehicle profiles, or SpeedView: Legacy Edition for its advertised background mode and GPX export. These Android apps suit different needs; the comparison below explains their features, payment models and limits.

Get NitroHUD on Google Play →A speedometer you can read at a glance, and a head-up display your windshield reflects.

Start with the screen you need

A mirrored HUD prepares numbers for a reflection; a floating display keeps speed visible over another app. Decide which you need, then whether you want live trip totals, saved routes, or files to use elsewhere. Compare those requirements before counting themes. The competitor information comes from the developers’ Google Play descriptions read on November 5, 2026. NitroHUD is not affiliated with the other apps or their developers.

NitroHUD: free HUD without ads

NitroHUD’s free features include speed in mph or km/h, mirrored HUD, GPS heading, one user-set speed alert, and live trip distance, duration, average speed and top speed. Live trip figures are available in the Trips tab; the free Solo dashboard shows the compass beneath the gauge. Three gauge themes are free: Nitro, Digital and Classic. You can use the app without creating an account, and PRO is optional for these features. The free Trips list also shows one saved trip.

What NitroHUD PRO adds, and where it falls short

PRO adds access to all 15 gauge themes and five layouts, acceleration timing, a G-force meter, altitude and grade, persistent odometer displays, more saved history, and CSV and GPX export. It uses an auto-renewing subscription with weekly, monthly and yearly plans; current prices and eligible trial offers come from Google Play. History is capped at 200 trips, despite the store description’s unlimited-history wording. NitroHUD has no floating overlay, built-in route map or dedicated background-recording mode. It also supports only mph and km/h. If you need speed beside navigation, mapped route review or knots, those omissions matter more than its theme selection.

KTW Apps: speed over navigation and route review

GPS Speedometer : Odometer HUD by KTW Apps advertises a floating speed display over navigation apps, saved routes, trip statistics and trip-log export. Its Google Play description also lists mirrored HUD, light and dark modes, and mph, km/h, knots and m/s. That gives it a stronger fit than NitroHUD for someone who wants speed visible while a map occupies the main screen. The Android listing offers a free download with ads and in-app purchases. It does not specify the export file formats or clearly identify the purchase structure, so check those details in the app before paying for an export workflow.

Ulysse Speedometer Pro: profiles and a broader trip computer

Ulysse Speedometer Pro’s Google Play listing describes multiple vehicle and activity profiles, overlays, HUD, background operation, and trip summaries for today, yesterday, the week and the month. It also names GPX and KML track export and music-player controls. Consider it for vehicle switching or period-based summaries, features NitroHUD does not offer. Pro is a paid Android download with an upfront purchase. Its listed update date is August 20, 2021; confirm availability and compatibility for your phone in Google Play before buying.

SpeedView Legacy: background tracking and road-type alerts

SpeedView: Legacy Edition remains listed on Google Play as a free, ad-supported Android app. Its description includes mirrored HUD, a recent-speed graph, GPX track export, background mode and three user-set warning thresholds for different road types. Consider it when background tracking or road-type thresholds are central to your choice. The Legacy listing shows June 21, 2022 as its update date. Check whether Google Play offers it for your device and try the features you need before relying on it.

Compare the payment model with the feature you actually need

A free download does not tell you whether exports or overlays are included. KTW’s listing leaves the exact paid-feature split unclear. SpeedView Legacy identifies its free edition as ad-supported, while Ulysse Pro requires an upfront purchase. NitroHUD’s exports and additional history require PRO. If avoiding recurring payments matters, distinguish a paid download from a subscription. For current amounts, renewal terms and trial conditions, consult Google Play and the purchase confirmation for your account. Do not infer a lifetime unlock from an in-app-purchase label alone.

Check NitroHUD’s display and saved results before committing

NitroHUD’s overspeed animation can make the speed digits fade while the warning pulses, so check readability from your mounted position while parked. Its alerts use thresholds you set; the app has no road-speed-limit database. For saved records, very short trips and demo trips are excluded from history, yet a saved message can still appear in some of those cases. Full storage can also prevent a new trip from being retained. Open Trips to confirm that a record exists, and export important records when available. These limits make NitroHUD less suitable if your main requirement is dependable archival trip logging.

Use a short checklist before you pay

Install the exact edition named here from Google Play. While parked, check the units, display, alerts and free-feature access. If records matter, complete an ordinary journey and inspect the saved result after stopping. For paid tools, confirm inclusion on the purchase screen. Read the developer’s data-safety and privacy information before granting access, especially when recording routes. Set up the phone before travel, mount it securely without obstructing your view, and make adjustments while stopped.

Frequently asked questions

Which option has a free HUD without ads?

NitroHUD includes mirrored HUD in its ad-free tier. A PRO subscription is optional for that feature. KTW and SpeedView Legacy declare ads in their free Android listings.

Which apps list a floating speed display?

KTW Apps and Ulysse Speedometer Pro both advertise overlays in their Google Play descriptions. NitroHUD’s HUD occupies its own screen and does not float over navigation.

Which apps name their export formats?

NitroHUD offers CSV and GPX with PRO; Ulysse Pro lists GPX and KML; SpeedView Legacy lists GPX. KTW lists trip-log export without naming formats, so confirm its output before choosing.

Can NitroHUD record trips with the screen off?

NitroHUD does not offer a dedicated background or screen-off recording mode. If that is essential, investigate the background modes advertised by Ulysse Pro and SpeedView Legacy and check them on your device.

Does buying a speedometer app guarantee better accuracy?

The payment model alone cannot establish measurement quality. These listings describe features rather than a controlled accuracy comparison, so they do not support naming an accuracy winner.

Is NitroHUD trip history unlimited?

No. The saved history holds up to 200 trips, and storage constraints can reduce retention. Free users see one saved trip; PRO unlocks access to additional history and export.

A speedometer you can read at a glance, and a head-up display your windshield reflects. NitroHUD shows GPS speed with the accuracy figure printed beside it, mirrors the readout for windshield use at night, logs the trip you are on, and times acceleration runs with your personal bests kept. No ads, no account, and trips stay on the phone.
