Does NitroHUD Work as an Android Auto Speedometer?
No. NitroHUD does not support Android Auto, so it cannot display its speedometer on your car’s screen through Android Auto. Its speed display and windshield HUD run on the phone. If you are looking for a speedometer app compatible with Android Auto, NitroHUD does not meet that requirement. The distinction matters before you troubleshoot a missing icon or consider PRO.
Why an Android app may not appear in Android Auto
Installing an app on an Android phone does not automatically make it available on the car display. Google describes Android Auto as a phone-powered experience with an interface designed for the car. An app needs Android Auto support to participate; the system does not simply reproduce every screen on your phone. NitroHUD offers a phone dashboard, without an Android Auto interface. Its absence from the car launcher is therefore expected, even if the app opens normally on the phone.
What to check in the Android Auto launcher
For a compatible app that seems to be missing, Google’s launcher guide points to Customize launcher in the phone’s Android Auto settings. You can find those settings by searching for Android Auto in your phone’s Settings app. The launcher controls let you hide compatible apps or change their order. They do not add Android Auto support to NitroHUD. If your navigation or music apps already appear on the car screen, do not treat NitroHUD’s missing icon alone as evidence that your car connection has failed.
HUD and Mirror refer to the phone display
In NitroHUD, HUD opens a full-screen gauge on the phone, and Mirror flips the readout horizontally for windshield reflection. Mirror does not mean wireless screen mirroring to the dashboard display. The HUD button and Mirror control are separate: opening HUD does not automatically switch Mirror on. Neither control pairs the phone with a car, sends the gauge to an infotainment screen, or connects to a factory windshield display. Choose them when you want to use the phone’s own screen or its reflection.
Changing the connection or buying PRO will not add support
Google supports both wired and wireless Android Auto connections on compatible equipment. Those are connection methods, not ways to make an unsupported app compatible. Switching between them will not put NitroHUD’s gauge on the car screen. PRO also does not add Android Auto: its additional gauge designs, dashboard layouts, and measurement tools remain features of the phone app. If the car display is your main requirement, do not subscribe expecting an Android Auto mode to appear after purchase.
Using phone gauges alongside car navigation
Treat navigation on the car display and NitroHUD on the phone as separate displays. NitroHUD is intended for use while visible. Its Keep screen on setting helps keep the phone display awake; it does not provide background trip recording. Do not rely on uninterrupted readings or a complete recording after locking the phone or switching to another phone app. Switching away does not guarantee an immediate pause in tracking, either. Check the GPS status after returning to NitroHUD, and make any adjustments only after stopping safely.
Android Auto and Android Automotive OS are different
Android Auto uses your phone to bring supported app experiences to a compatible car display. Android Automotive OS is built into the vehicle and runs apps installed directly in the car. Google documents these as different platforms. NitroHUD does not offer a dedicated Android Automotive OS app either. A stereo advertised as running Android is not, by that description alone, a supported NitroHUD setup. Check exactly which system the vehicle or stereo uses with its manufacturer before choosing an app for it.
If you need speed on the car screen
Use an app that explicitly supports Android Auto and documents a speed display. Waze is one option: its official help covers Android Auto navigation and a Show speedometer setting. While parked, disconnect the phone from Android Auto, open Waze on the phone, then open its menu, Settings, and Speedometer, and enable Show speedometer. Waze says phone settings apply when you use it in the car. Reconnect and check the display before setting off. This is Waze’s own readout; it does not import NitroHUD’s gauge, themes, or trip data. Continue using the vehicle’s instruments as your primary driving reference.

Frequently asked questions
Can NitroHUD show a floating speedometer over a navigation app?
No. NitroHUD does not offer a floating speed window over other apps. Its full-screen HUD stays within NitroHUD on the phone; it cannot add an overlay to a navigation app on either the phone or Android Auto.
Does NitroHUD need to connect to my car to measure speed?
No. It uses the phone’s location readings rather than a connection to the vehicle. Allow location access for the phone speedometer. You do not need to find a pairing button or select your car in NitroHUD.
Can I control NitroHUD from the car’s touchscreen?
NitroHUD has no Android Auto controls on the car touchscreen. Choose its units, display, and other settings on the phone before moving. If something needs changing during a drive, stop safely before operating the phone.
Will granting location permission make NitroHUD appear in Android Auto?
No. Location permission allows NitroHUD to obtain the phone readings used for speed. It does not create a car-screen interface. A missing Android Auto icon and a phone display waiting for location are separate issues.
Is a speed-limit sign the same as a speedometer?
No. A speedometer shows how fast you are traveling; a speed-limit sign shows a road limit. NitroHUD’s alert thresholds are numbers you choose yourself. The app does not have a database of legal road speed limits.
Where can I ask about future Android Auto support?
You can send a feature question to support@hugosoftware.net. Include your phone model, Android version, and car or stereo model so the request is clear. Android Auto is currently unsupported; there is no release date to promise.
A speedometer you can read at a glance, and a head-up display your windshield reflects. NitroHUD shows GPS speed with the accuracy figure printed beside it, mirrors the readout for windshield use at night, logs the trip you are on, and times acceleration runs with your personal bests kept. No ads, no account, and trips stay on the phone.
