GPS Speedometer Not Working on Android?

If your GPS speedometer is not working on Android, allow precise location for the app, turn on the phone’s Location setting, and check reception outdoors with a clear view of the sky. In NitroHUD, also turn off Demo drive before testing real speed. Make these changes while parked.

1. Allow precise location for NitroHUD

Touch and hold the NitroHUD icon, open App info, then go to Permissions > Location. Choose Allow only while using the app. On Android 12 and later, turn on Use precise location if that option appears; an app can have location access while receiving only an approximate position. Return to NitroHUD after changing the permission. Menu names vary by phone, so use the Settings search box if you cannot find Location permissions. You can change a previous denial here without waiting for another permission prompt.

2. Check the phone’s Location setting separately

Open Android Settings > Location and turn on Use location. This device setting and NitroHUD’s permission are separate: allowing the app does not turn on location for the whole phone. On devices with Google Play services, you can also check Location > Location services > Location Accuracy and enable Improve Location Accuracy. That service uses available satellite, wireless and sensor information to help estimate position. It is separate from the app’s precise-location permission, and enabling it does not guarantee a usable speed reading in a garage or tunnel.

3. Test reception somewhere with open sky

Move out of a garage, building or covered parking area before judging reception. Buildings, bridges and trees can block satellite signals, while nearby walls can reflect them. Start with the phone safely outside in an open area and look for a fresh location reading. Then compare that with reception in its usual position inside the parked car. If the problem appears only in the car, try another secure position before driving. There is no fixed waiting time that guarantees a signal, and NitroHUD cannot restore satellite reception where signals are blocked.

4. Recover after a denied permission or failed request

NitroHUD may show Location is off after a permission denial. The Enable location button may not appear immediately when permission is denied after the Drive screen has opened. Switch to Settings inside the app and back to Drive to refresh the screen, or go directly to Android’s App info settings. After correcting permission, fully close NitroHUD and launch it again to start a new location request. Repeatedly tapping Enable location may not restart an existing request. Start trip begins recording; it is not a GPS repair button.

5. Separate a zero reading from a missing reading

A zero while parked is expected and does not prove GPS has failed. NitroHUD filters very low speeds to reduce movement caused by position drift. There is also a limitation: when the phone does not supply speed directly, slow movement may still read zero because small position changes are filtered out. A short walking test is therefore inconclusive. For a later check during normal travel, set up the phone before departure and have a passenger observe it. Do not speed up just to trigger a number or operate the phone while driving.

6. Keep the app visible during the test

Test with NitroHUD open in the foreground and the screen unlocked. The app has no background location mode, so do not depend on uninterrupted readings after locking the phone or switching apps. When you return, check whether the displayed fix is fresh before trusting the speed. If location also jumps in Google Maps, its official troubleshooting guidance suggests turning off Battery Saver; use that as a temporary diagnostic check, then repeat the same test.

7. Use Demo drive to check the display

Finish any active trip first, because changing Demo drive ends an ongoing recording. Open NitroHUD’s Settings tab and turn on Demo drive, then return to Drive. The DEMO DRIVE badge and Simulated drive caption identify generated readings. The simulation begins at zero, so let it progress before deciding the display is stuck. Changing numbers show that the gauge can respond to simulated data; they do not confirm location permission or satellite reception. Keep acceleration timers unarmed during this check, because simulated runs can affect saved personal bests. Turn Demo drive off when finished to return to real location readings.

8. Check whether the number is fading rather than frozen

If digits repeatedly become faint while the speed continues changing, check whether Over your limit is showing. NitroHUD’s speed warning can pulse the speed digits as well as the surrounding display, making them harder to read at part of the cycle. While parked, turn off the relevant alert in Settings > Speed alerts and compare the display. This checks a visibility problem; it does not improve GPS reception or change the phone’s location permission.

9. Narrow down a problem that persists

Check your current location in Google Maps outdoors. If it also cannot locate you, restart the phone and repeat the permission and device-location checks; contact the device manufacturer if location remains unavailable across apps. If Maps finds you but NitroHUD still fails, that narrows the problem without proving that a usable speed is available. Check Google Play for a NitroHUD update. If the issue continues, contact support@hugosoftware.net with your phone model, Android version, app version, exact status caption, whether demo worked, and whether Maps found your position. Avoid including trip coordinates or other private location details.

Frequently asked questions

Does GPS unavailable mean my phone’s GPS is broken?

No. NitroHUD uses this message for location failures other than a permission denial, including a request timing out. The caption alone does not diagnose a hardware fault.

Why does NitroHUD show GPS off when Android Location is on?

GPS off is NitroHUD’s idle status. It does not necessarily describe the phone’s Location switch. Check app permission and whether a location request has started.

Should I wait for a Weak signal warning?

No. Poor accuracy may still appear as GPS ±… m rather than a separate Weak signal message. A visible speed number alone is not evidence of good reception.

Will calibrating the compass fix missing speed?

Compass calibration addresses direction problems. NitroHUD gets speed from location data and derives heading from movement, so waving the phone in a figure eight is not a speed-recovery step.

Does the phone need a GPS receiver?

For satellite-based speed, yes. NitroHUD can be installed on devices without GPS hardware, and some Wi-Fi-only tablets lack it. Installing the app does not add a receiver.

A speedometer you can read at a glance, and a head-up display your windshield reflects. NitroHUD shows GPS speed with the accuracy figure printed beside it, mirrors the readout for windshield use at night, logs the trip you are on, and times acceleration runs with your personal bests kept. No ads, no account, and trips stay on the phone.
