How to Use a GPS Speedometer App
To use a GPS speedometer app, enable location, allow precise access while using the app, choose mph or km/h and wait for a fresh location update. In NitroHUD, the speed display works separately from Start trip, which begins a new trip recording. Set everything up while parked.
1. Open NitroHUD and allow location
On your first launch, tap Next through the introduction until you reach Location permission, then tap Allow location. In the Android prompt, allow access while using the app and select precise location if that choice appears. Also check that the phone’s Location setting is on. The introduction can finish before the permission result arrives, so reaching Drive does not prove access was granted. If a subscription screen appears, close it with the X to continue with the free speedometer. Returning users normally reach the dashboard directly, and NitroHUD starts requesting location updates.
2. Fix a denied permission before continuing
If access was denied, touch and hold the NitroHUD app icon, open App info, then Permissions and Location. Allow access while using the app and enable Use precise location where available; wording varies by phone and Android version. Return to NitroHUD afterward. The app may show Location is off when permission is denied, even if the phone’s main Location switch is on. There is also a display issue: Enable location may not appear immediately after a denial. Switch to Settings and back to Drive to refresh that screen. If granting permission does not restart updates, close and reopen the app.
3. Choose mph or km/h
Open Settings and find Units, then select mph or km/h. You can also tap the current unit beneath the gauge on Drive to switch between them. NitroHUD defaults to km/h on a fresh setup, so check the label and match it to the road signs you will be reading. The setting also changes the units used for displayed trip distance. Choose it before setting an optional speed alert so you can check the threshold in your preferred unit.
4. Check the GPS status before setting off
Wait for Acquiring GPS… to change to a location readout. Try the initial setup outdoors with a clear view of the sky: buildings, bridges, trees and underground parking can interfere with reception. A stationary car can show zero after a location update; you do not need to drive just to grant permission or acquire a position. Check the status text as well as the speed number. The current version can display a numeric speed with poor location accuracy and does not show its separate Weak signal message. Use the status table to decide what to check next.
5. Preview the display without driving
For a stationary preview, open Settings and turn on Demo drive. Drive shows a DEMO DRIVE badge and Simulated drive caption while the app generates example movement. Those numbers do not prove that location permission works. Use the preview to pick a readable gauge through Theme; Nitro, Classic and Digital are available without PRO. Turn Demo drive off before your real trip, then check GPS status again. Changing between demo and real GPS ends any active trip recording, so finish experimenting before you record.
6. Set up the phone for use in a car
Secure the phone in a mount where it cannot slide or block your view, and check that you can read the speed and unit from your normal seating position. For a direct view of the phone, leave Mirror off; that control reverses the display for reflection. The default Solo layout is a starting point. Phone and navigation controls can distract you from driving, so park safely before making changes. Treat NitroHUD as an additional display and continue using the car’s instruments.
7. Tap Start trip to record your drive
On Drive, tap Start trip while parked. The button changes to Stop trip, confirming that a recording is active. This does not confirm permission or GPS quality. To see live distance, duration, average and top speed without changing your dashboard layout, open Trips, where the recording appears under Live trip. This view is available without PRO. Start recording before departure if you want the beginning included: opening a trip later does not reconstruct the distance you already drove. Leave the controls alone once you are moving.
8. Set an optional speed reminder
In Settings, find Speed alerts. Adjust the displayed threshold with the plus and minus controls, select Beep once, Beep while over or Screen only, and turn the alert on with its switch. The initial alert is off by default. If you want an audible reminder, also check Alert sound under Sound & haptics. One alert is available without PRO. NitroHUD does not look up the road’s speed limit or update the threshold as you enter another zone; it compares your displayed speed with the value you chose. Set a reminder deliberately rather than treating it as a legal-limit detector.
9. Stop the trip and check the result
After parking at your destination, tap Stop trip on Drive or in the Live trip card on Trips. A real trip must contain at least 50 meters of recorded distance and last at least 20 seconds to be added to history; demo trips are excluded. Check for the new entry under Saved trips rather than relying on the Trip saved notification. That message currently checks distance without confirming all saving conditions, and a storage failure can also leave no saved entry. A brief stationary button test therefore cannot confirm that trip history works. Open the saved entry to inspect its result before assuming it was retained.
| Status on screen | Meaning and next step |
|---|---|
| Acquiring GPS… | Waiting for location. Stay parked somewhere with a clearer view of the sky. |
| Location is off | Permission was denied. Check NitroHUD’s permission as well as the phone’s Location setting. |
| GPS unavailable | The location request failed. Check location settings and reception, then reopen the app if needed. |
| GPS ±n m | An update includes a position-accuracy estimate in meters. It is not an mph or km/h error margin. |
| Last fix ns ago | The latest location update is old. Do not treat the remaining number as a fresh speed measurement. |
Frequently asked questions
Does NitroHUD need to connect to my car?
No car pairing is part of the setup. NitroHUD gets speed from the phone’s location data, using the reported speed when available or calculating it from successive positions. You do not enter tire size or connect a vehicle sensor.
Will a trip keep recording with the screen locked or another app open?
Do not depend on continuous recording in those conditions. NitroHUD is designed for use with the app visible and has no background location permission or location foreground service. Switching away is not an explicit pause command, and uninterrupted recording outside the app has not been verified on a device.
Does Stop trip turn off the speedometer?
No. Stop trip ends the current recording, but it does not stop the GPS watcher. The speedometer can keep updating while NitroHUD remains open. There is no separate Pause trip control; a later Start trip creates another recording.
How much trip history can I see without PRO?
The free Trips view shows the newest saved trip. PRO gives access to additional retained trips, but history is not unlimited: the app caps it at 200 entries, and storage pressure can reduce retention further. A locked older entry does not mean the recording failed.
Can I change units during a recording?
Yes. Changing mph or km/h updates the display without ending the active trip or resetting its recorded distance. Wait until safely parked to change it. You can also inspect a saved trip in the newly selected units afterward.
A speedometer you can read at a glance, and a head-up display your windshield reflects. NitroHUD shows GPS speed with the accuracy figure printed beside it, mirrors the readout for windshield use at night, logs the trip you are on, and times acceleration runs with your personal bests kept. No ads, no account, and trips stay on the phone.
