Setting up a phone head-up display that actually works
A head-up display is not a gadget so much as a trick of geometry. Lay a phone flat on the dashboard with a bright shape on a black screen, and the windscreen above it acts as a partial mirror: you see the shape floating out in front of the car, roughly where your eyes are already pointed. Nothing is projected, nothing is added to the glass, and the only requirement is that the image on the phone be reversed, because a mirror reverses it back. Why the image must be mirrored
Reflection flips left and right. A digit displayed normally arrives at your eye backwards, which is why a HUD mode is not simply a big-font screen: it renders the readout as its own mirror image so that the reflection reads correctly. Where the phone goes
Flat on the dashboard, screen up, as close to the base of the windscreen as the shape of the car allows, and roughly in line with your normal line of sight rather than off to one side. The further the phone sits from the glass, the lower the reflection appears in your field of view; the closer, the higher. A non-slip mat is worth more than an expensive holder here, because the phone must not slide under braking, and a dark mat also stops the dashboard itself reflecting into the glass and washing the image out. Keep it clear of any airbag cover, and make sure it does not obstruct your view of the road. Why it works at night and struggles by day
The reflection you see is a small fraction of the light leaving the screen, so it competes with everything else arriving through the glass. In daylight the sky behind the windscreen is thousands of times brighter, and a phone simply cannot win that contest, which is why factory head-up displays use dedicated high-brightness projectors. Treat a phone HUD as a night and tunnel instrument, and use a normal large readout in daylight.
Designing the display for a windscreen
The rules are the opposite of a normal app screen. The background must be genuinely black, because every lit pixel becomes a ghost on the glass. The content should be one or two large elements, not a dashboard of small ones, since only bold shapes survive being reflected and defocused. Colour matters: an amber or green readout carries well and sits comfortably in night vision, while pure white bleeds and blue is the first thing to blur. Brightness should be high enough to read but no higher, since an over-bright reflection is a distraction and leaves an after-image when you look back at the road.
The double image, and what to do about it
Laminated windscreens are two sheets of glass with a plastic layer between them, and both surfaces reflect, so a bright shape often appears twice, slightly offset. The offset grows with the rake of the screen. There are three practical remedies: move the phone closer to the glass, which reduces the separation; keep the display bold enough that a faint secondary image does not obscure it; or fit a HUD reflector film or a small combiner panel, which gives a single crisp image at the cost of another object on the dashboard. Three settings decide whether the arrangement survives an hour. The screen must be kept awake, or the display goes dark at the worst moment. The orientation must be locked, so a bump does not rotate the layout. And brightness should be set once and left alone, because automatic brightness reacts to oncoming headlights and makes the reflection pulse.
